Simply open a Paragraph Style window with the style applied to the text that needs to be searched for the parentheses, choose GREP Style from the list and click New GREP Style. But what if your document is a scientific volume of a few hundred pages? Use GREP styles! If there are only two paragraphs to check or even one page of text it’s often just fine to do it manually. Let’s say in your document you need to italicise all text between parentheses. or parts of these, text relative to specific areas and much much more. So GREP can be used to easily find and style symbols, dates, prices, telephone numbers, email addresses, names etc. The code is a compressed version of telling InDesign to “find all pound symbols” or “find any four digit number preceded by the word ‘year’ and a space” or “find a word at the end of a sentence beginning with capital letter and repeat three times”. Using a special notation users can specify a particular place, range or pattern in text which can be individually styled.
GREP (Regular Expressions) styles allow automatically applying character styles to paragraph text based on programmable criteria. But the advantages of empowering styling text overweight the complexities of using GREP, however. Since version CS4 InDesign offers a very powerful feature that is sometimes overlooked by designers or not used because it may seem too complex or hard to find good documentation on - GREP styles.
